This surgical procedure removes the residual or retained wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to grow in the jaw in the 20s, and for the most people the growth of wisdom teeth does not create any problems other than temporary pain during growth. A problem may arise if you do not have enough space for proper position and growth or if teeth start to grow in wrong direction which may lead to destruction of the bone, the surrounding teeth and cause inflammation. This problem can be seen on x-rays and problematic wisdom teeth are best removed as soon as possible.
Extraction of wisdom teeth is not a complicated procedure, and it is usually done under local anesthesia. After the procedure there might be a slight swelling, but this is normal and can be calmed with cold compresses. In some cases it may take a few days to change the diet in favor of softer food.
