Pacemakers are small, electronic devices used to treat excessively slow heart rhythms (bradycardia or differents types of block). Pacemakers send signals to heart muscle that cause the muscle to contract at the correct pace, so that blood is pumped properly through the body. Today’s advanced pacemakers adjust heart rates according to changes in the body’s activity level. Thus, the pacemaker adjusts the heart’s rate when the person is resting or exercising.
When heart’s structures assuring normal heart rythm and frequency are alterate, a slow cardiac rythm can occur, leading to various symptoms ( dizziness, confusion, syncope – loss of conciouness, angina – chest pain, dyspnea – difficult breath, renal or hepatic disfunction, low exertion capacity).
The major beneffit is in case of patients who have cardiac failure with low ejection fraction (<35%; the ejection fraction is the measurement of how much blood is being pumped out of the left ventricle of the heart (the percentage)), wich are at high risk for developing severe arrhythmias.
