Francisc Hospital Palliative Medicine

The aim of palliative care is to maintain and, if possible, to improve the quality of life of patients with incurable disease according to their individual wishes and needs. On the basis of Christian values ​​and open at the same time, the specially trained, cross-professional team from medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, social services, psychotherapy and pastoral care treat the seriously ill and the dying. The focus of the work is the holistic and dignified accompaniment of the patients. These include relieving pain and other ailments such as shortness of breath or nausea, but also dealing with anxiety and grief, as well as psychosocial and spiritual support.

The clinic's offer is primarily intended as a crisis intervention: if the disease progresses rapidly and in situations of acute worsening, critically ill patients are admitted to the palliative care unit at the Franciscus Hospital. A goal of the therapy is always the discharge home, in a care facility or a stationary hospice. The Franciscan Hospital organizes further care at home or in the hospital.

Relatives and friends play an important role in patient care and well-being. For them, a comfortable room is set up on the ward, where they can retreat for talks or a short break, but which is also available for overnight stays.

Medical Studies at the UKE

The UKE educates about 3,300 medical specialists and dentists. Some of our students achieve significantly better than average results in performance tests in Germany. We are praised throughout the country for our modern training techniques in which theory and practice are interconnected in an exceptional and progressive manner, and in which topical elements such as digital textbooks or computer-based simulation programs are utilized. The model study course iMED Hamburg, which was introduced in 2012, already fulfills the criteria for the further development of medical studies in Germany which were defined by the Science Council.
